Dear Family & Friends,
This trip is quite the adventure! Over 4000 miles covered so far and about another 2800 miles to go!
After we left Ottawa we rode along the upper Great Lakes on the Canadian side and then crossed over one of the smaller lakes on a long bridge into the USA. Before we left friends and family were warning me how difficult it could be to get back into the USA. Other than about a hour long line all they did was check our past port and told us to have a good ride! Not that it was difficult to get into Canada but they certainly asked more questions.
We rode across northern Michigan's from one end to the other. Imagine a 150 miles of absolutely straight road going through such a dense forest all you see are trees. Now you know…
The weather has certainly been all over the place from cold and rainy to hot and sunny. Today we rode from Minneapolis to South Dakota. It was very windy and most of the day in the 50 degree range. Tomorrow it’s supposed to be 92!
Tomorrow we are riding through the Badlands National Park, Sturges, and then onto Deadwood, one of my favorite old west towns.
Check out the photos below and there is plenty of commentary written below than.
Jason
PS:as some of you may know I have worked hard to lose 40lbs over the last year. Road trip food is not conducive to healthy eating and I’m sure I’ve gained a few pounds I’ll need to lose when I get home but the good news when I got dressed this morning my Sox still fit fine!!🤣🤣
The world famous Corn Palace. I never heard of it but John suggested we go and it was a great suggestion. A monument to corn that is a giant gift shop during the week and on weekends it’s a concert hall, theatre, and basket ball court!
Can’t go to the Corn Palace without trying out their popcorn! It was quite good even without butter.
This is inside. You see the stage and in front of it is a basketball court. During the week they have many displays of corn related souvenirs on wheels they roll out. I was able to find my sweet wife, Bonnie some really “corny” souvenir's…🤣🤣
Also if you look at the walls they are all decorated in “corn” art.
Obviously traveling these days you see lots of signs related to politics. This was in upper Michigan where Trump is still popular and we saw many signs like this one. In Canada it’s just the opposite. We passed on house in Ottawa which had “F—K TRUMP, CANADA IS NOT FOR SALE”in bright red 6ft lettering!
The one surprise I experienced was at at stop light in Canada. A young man pulled up next to me. He saw the sign on the back of John’s motorcycle that said “We didn’t vote for him”. Evidentially the young many didn’t like that because he rolled down his window and started screaming at me! He yelled “GO HOME TO CALIFORNIA!!! I LIKE TRUMP.XXXXXXXX”
Generally the sign got lots of smiles in Canada but you can’t please them all.
John certainly removed the sign before we crossed back over the the USA.
A stop along the Great Lakes. Unfortunately due to the fires Canada is dealing with it was quite hazy.
Interesting store. By the name you would think it’s a tire store and they do sell tires but they also sell gardening supplies, groceries, and miscellaneous house hold goods.
I met this nice lady at a gas stop. She too was on a motorcycle trip. She learned to ride at 75 and is still riding at 80! My role model.😁
Some interesting signs at a colorful road side cafe.
Enjoying a mid morning breakfast after riding a 100 miles. I love the local road side cafes with lots of character!
Below we visited a friend of my wife Bonnie and her husband. They met through a mutual passion for mosaic art and have become good friends. And her husband is like me, a total car nut! He also built this beautiful large log cabin himself plus two large garages for all his cars and projects. It was a real pleasure to meet and get know Racheal & Doug. Hope to see them when they come to California!
GARAGES!!!!😁
Projects, my kinda guy.
A 1930s pick up truck Doug used restoring. That was his father’s business! I wish I had a child that wanted to take over my restoration business.
