Dear Family & Friends,
It has been five amazing days at Lake Como.
I have been to Lake Como several times over the past 6 years on various motorcycle trips. Most of the time with my friend Duane who is a great riding companion but for a romantic week in Lake Como he can’t compare to my wife Bonnie. So every time I came here I just kept thinking how amazing it would be to be here with Bonnie. I knew she would love it here.
We arrived Last Thursday and it has been one adventure after another.
We are staying at a great hotel called the Miralago, in Cernobio, across the bay from the city of Como. I would highly recommend it. It is true old world class and charm with a great location right on the lake. Right in front of the hotel is a park like setting with activities every day and night adding to the festive feeling of the area. At the end of the park is a ferry stop where you can take a ferry to the many other beautiful towns around the lake.
On our first full day we took a ferry to the city of Como. It is by far the largest city by the lake. It is a Medieval city so it is quite old and beautiful. Lots to see with interesting streets, shops, and buildings every where. And a stunning Duomo in the middle of town.
We spent the day walking, site seeing, shopping, and eating.. Hopefully the walking is burning off what we eat… We have averaged about 7 miles a day walking!
The next day we went to Bellagio. It was about a two hour boat ride up the lake. Mostly because of all the stops we made along the way, but that was fine because we saw so many beautiful towns along the way.
Bellagio is absolutely gorgeous, much nicer than the Belagio in Las Vegas. It is basically a tourist town set in a very old city. Most of what is there are great restaurants and shopping. It is set along a mountain side so there are steep streets and lots of stairs. Hopefully it burned off some of the calories from what we ate there.
The next day we spent around the small town our hotel is in. Over the weekend the area between the hotel and the lake is like a street fair. Many arts and crafts booths, live music, and other activities. All weekend the music played late into the night but honestly it didn’t bother us since the mood was so festive. We even spent a few hours on our balcony overlooking the lake, reading, drinking wine and enjoying the music. Very, very relaxing.
Our last full day we walked from our town to the city of Como, a good few miles. Along the way there was so much to see that the time went by quickly.
After we arrived in Como we walked around the town a bit and then decided to take the funicular up the side of the local mountain. We were told there was a restaurant up there with great views of the lake.
As it turned out it was one of the best sites of the week at Lake Como! It was far more than a restaurant. There was a beautiful old church that we walked into, great small walking paths and a neighborhood of villas overlooking the lake that were absolutely spectacular!
After a good long walk we went into a little cafe and had some lunch. Our waitress was an absolutely charming young women. We got to talking to her and she was so interesting. She was from Egypt, spoke three languages fluently, and moved to Italy to make her way in the world. Back home there just wasn’t enough freedom for her to pursue her dreams so she moved to Lake Como, works as a waitress, and takes a train 40 minutes each way to Milan several times a week to attend medical school!
Some people have an indomitable spirit. Needless to say we left her a generous tip to help her with her studies.
So sadly, tonight is our last night in Lake Como, and tomorrow we take a train to Lucerne Switzerland for some new adventures, but I think Bonnie and I will always have very fond memories of Lake Como. Certainly one of the most beautiful and romantic spots on earth.
I have posted lots of photos on my blog with more details, I hope you enjoy.
PS: I know some of you get tired of my Trump reports from our trip but honestly you cannot believe the blow back and embarrassment Trump is causing our country. We have met many other American’s visiting Europe who say the same thing. One day we were on a ferry and met this British couple and we got to talking. As soon as they knew we were from the USA they started opening up about Trump. I asked them if I could record it and they were more than anxious to share their opinions so here is the video..
Here is a random photo of one of the many ferry stops we made.
OK let’s get right into the food photos… above is a mushroom and ham pasta and a crab and pasta.. Both excellent.
My sweetheart and I enjoy some shrimp..
This was near our hotel and by the water.. I am guessing at one time it was a grounds keeper’s house for the villa next door.
A magnificent villa overlooking the water. If I owned this I am sure some of my family and friends would come visit me??
Every bit of shore line along Lake Como is gorgeous.
Here we are arriving at Bellagio..
LOTS of stairs everywhere so good exercise as well as shopping..
At first I bought it was strictly a walking town until I saw cars along the road. The people and cars seem to safely share the same spaces.
Only in Italy.. I could not resist and got one of these so next time you are over and we serve you salad dressing in one don’t get too grossed out.
Several times today the local Italians asked me if I was the man on my shirt. When I sold my business I stopped getting haircuts. I thought I would let my hair grow until I looked like a combination of the mad doctor in the Back to the Future movies, the mad politician Bernie Sanders, and the mad scientist Albert Einstein. I think I have achieved my goal!!
Some of you are going to hate this but Obama is still quite popular in Europe..
Lots and lots of motorcycles everywhere. Made me miss mine…
Notice the villa half way up the mountain..
Half way back from Bellagio and storm suddenly moved in with wind and howling rain. It didn’t last long but it was quite dramatic and quite refreshing after all the heat.
Our hotel beautifully lit up in the back ground with vendors, bars, and music everywhere.
We always seem to enjoy our time together. 🙂
A small cafe built into an alley by the lake.
Italian Sushi… yum.
I finally got Bonnie the car she deserves and she is thrilled…!! I just hope the boat doesn’t sink carrying it back….. 😉
Inside one of the fancy hotels we walked by on our stroll around the lake.
This villa has housed Napolean Bonapart, a Russian Tsar, and many kings and queens..
Lots of sea planes buzzing everywhere. It is standard transport around the lake after ferries.
Another nice Villa we walked by.
I don’t think there is a “poor” section around Lake Como.
A local bird convention.
A swan and her two chicks.
It is sad that even Lake Como has a discarded plastic problem..
We couldn’t figure out why the chicks swam with one foot behind them, so strange.
Lake Como Harbor.
Time for lunch…. again. Some great lasagna and a margarita..
Some more of the beautiful architecture around Lake Como.
What a great name for a market.. nothing makes the mouth water like barf?
That price is in Euros. in dollars these tennis shoes where over $1000. Crazy if you ask me.
Riding the funicular up the mountain behind Como.
At the top it was spectacular
I think I said something wrong.. 🙁
Our hotel looking down from the mountain.
We are certainly enjoy our vacation!
On the ferry back to our hotel a storm suddenly blew in..
Back to our hotel and this finishes our time at Lake Como.
